There couldn't have been a more predictable title, but it's apt nonetheless. Anyone who has seen the popular film of the same name, Starring Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas, will basically get a flavor of the state, where it's shown that just because the protagonist is from Alabama, has a drawl, wears cowboy boots and drinks at a saloon doesn't mean he is dumb, isn't ambitious, or isn't smart. In fact Witherspoon in the end, not only chooses Lucas who is from Alabama over the very eligible New Yorker Patrick Dempsey, but she also chooses Alabama over New York. It's probably an ode to the southern goodness and simplicity.
Alabama the 30th in terms of size amongst all the American states and is located on the Southeastern side of the United States, with Montgomery as its capital and Birmingham its largest city by population. Alabama is partly divided into gentle plains and mountainous regions mostly towards the North, with the Tennessee River cutting a large valley creating numerous creeks, streams, rivers, mountains, and lakes. Alabama has a humid subtropical climate, and hence has mild winters, so it's a place perfect for those who want to get away from the biting cold and incessant snowing of winter, or for those who just want a good suntan. One can also expect frequent showers, to pipe down the heat in summers.
There is a reason that Alabama hosts more than 100,000 visitors a year from various parts of the world, with its beaches a major asset in boosting tourism. And let's not forget the very active music scene, soaked in Jazz and Blues, or good ol' country music, with over 300 music festivals throughout the year. To indulge in a slice of the good old west, one can opt for a scenic trail ride, apt for all ages, or a one- to two-hour guided ride in the beautiful Alabama Mountains. One can also enjoy camping, picnics, parties, day camps, lay-ups for traveling horsemen. Most importantly, with Alabama being at the forefront of the American Civil War has left a trail of History, which is preserved and showcased for posterity. Starting your Alabama vacation won't be a difficult job either, with 8 major airports peppered throughout the state. It's also very well connected through road, rail and water.
In the end these lines from the state song would best sum up the Alabama vacation experience:
“Where the perfumed south-wind whispers,
Thy magnolia groves among,
Softer than a mother's kisses
Sweeter than a mother's song;
Where the golden jasmine trailing,
Woos the treasure-laden bee,
Alabama, Alabama,
We will aye be true to thee!”
