Sandwiched between the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, this is the heartland of the Sunshine State. Never more than an easy hour from the coast, Central Florida is an excellent home base from which explore both coastlines or even South Florida, the Keys and the Florida Panhandle for those unafraid of a little driving. Served by two international airports Orlando International and Orlando Sanford and an excellent road network, this easily accessible region offers something for everyone; whether it is the thrills and spills of theme parks, shopping and dining or the tranquility of the abundant lakes and national parks.

Away from the Greater Orlando area where the theme parks of Disney and Universal Studios are located, there are a number of attractions, both old and new to tempt those wishing to try something a little different.

Nature lovers can indulge their passion for trail walking or bird and wildlife spotting in the hundreds of green spaces and lakes in the area. The Green Swamp – more picturesque than it sounds – region of Central Florida acts as the headlands for the Everglades system and is home to innumerable species of flora and fauna. Whether you consider the American Alligator an awesome top predator, a tasty dish or a walking handbag and matching shoes – there’s plenty of them to see both in the wild and in captivity – day and night airboat rides and alligator attractions such as Gatorland offer the opportunity to get up close and personal with Florida’s favorite reptile. Guided kayak tours are another way of seeing some of Central Florida’s least disturbed wild areas – from simple half day trips for novices to multi-day tours, theres something for every skill (and fitness) level.

Golf is big business in Florida, with abundant courses to suit every skill level and a number of world class golf academies available to those who want to take the opportunity to improve their game. Golf carts are almost always included in the cost of a tee time - a necessity in the Florida heat – don’t forget a hat, sunscreen and plenty to drink though.

The mild, almost nonexistent winter in Central Florida means that it is a popular destination for “snowbirds” so called for their predilection for flying south for the winter as well as the color of their hair. There are some great deals to be made on longer term villa rentals for those wishing to soak up some winter sun (and take a break from the grandkids).

Although peak vacation rental season in this region coincides with school holiday periods, the weather in July and August can be too extreme for some, with temperatures peaking at 100 degrees or more and high humidity. Ideal times of year to visit are March to May and September to November when there is less chance of rain and the temperatures remain in the high eighties to low nineties. Hurricane season is officially from June 1st to November 30th but with some of the world’s most sophisticated weather forecasting systems and modern construction codes, there is no reason to avoid the area during this period. Hurricanes that do make landfall lose power quickly as they move inland and serious disruption is very rare.
