Facing into the Atlantic Ocean, Florida's East coast is an oft neglected destination for those planning a trip to Florida. With miles of award winning beaches, undisturbed wildlife refuges, lively towns up and down the coast and a surprising amount of history, the East Coast is a destination worth considering for those looking for holiday accommodation away from the commercialized Central Florida and Gulf Coast areas. There's certainly more to see here than cruise ships and shuttle launches.
Daytona with its famous beach and speedway, is a popular location for holiday accommodation. Formerly famous as a notorious spring break location, this destination is still popular with young and old but is no longer a raucous as it once was. Couples, families and groups can come and enjoy the festivities of the Daytona 500 and Bike Week plus other festivals and events as well as the miles of beaches offering year round water sports and the famous wide sandy beach. Other coastal locations worthy of mention include New Smyrna Beach, Palm Bay and Melbourne – all of which offer great beaches, water sports, and beachfront dining and entertainment.
Popular with Shuttle and rocket enthusiasts, the Space Coast areas around Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral offer unparalleled views of launches, particularly at nighttime – indeed it is common for vacation rentals in the area to book well in advance according to NASA's published launch schedule. The visitor's center at Kennedy Space Center offers a chance to meet and dine with real astronauts and ask the questions we all want to know (you know – the ones about how they go to the toilet in zero gravity). Up close tours also give visitors the opportunity to visit real working areas of Kennedy Space Center including satellites and rockets being prepared for launch. Other related attractions in the area include the US Astronaut Hall of Fame and the Aviation Museum The historically restricted access to the area has also led to the creation of some of the best protected wildlife preserves in Florida, offering glimpses of rare and endangered aquatic, land animal and bird species.
For the outdoorsman, this area offers some of the finest fishing available both inland and offshore with record breaking bass and crappie in the St Johns River and abundant trout, snook and redfish populating the Indian River Lagoon as well as big game fish on offshore charters. Canoe, kayak and bass boats are available to hire locally either individually or as part of a tour group and offer a great way to get up close for fishing, wildlife spotting and general touring. Access to the theme parks and attractions of Central Florida is good, being typically less than an hours drive from the beachfront to downtown Orlando which makes the East Coast an ideal location for a villa rental for visitors who want the peace and tranquility of a beach vacation with the option of the occasional visit to the Orlando area attractions. Whether you are looking for holiday accommodation for a full vacation, a long weekend or to tag onto the back end of an Orlando area vacation, there's plenty of variety in the area from beachfront condo rentals to full sized luxury villa rentals.
