The Best Vacation Rental PropertiesThe Best Vacation Rental Properties

Oklahoma immortalized through the 1943 Rodger and Hammerstein musical of the same name, is the 20th largest state in the United States in terms of area with Oklahoma City as its capital, and is located in its South Central region. Its terrain is an amalgamation of small mountains, prairie and forests. Oklahoma gets its name from the Choctaw (Native American people) phrase okla humma, which literally means red people.

The Oklahoma climate, although primarily temperate, has a tendency to be erratic, with severely hot afternoons to freezing nights. Also the temperature varies throughout the state, with some parts receiving really heavy downpours, while certain others barely receiving any rainfall. The same can also be said about the snowfall throughout the state. Oklahoma is connected to the rest of the country through two Major airports: the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, the state's largest, and the Tulsa International Airport, the state's second largest commercial airport. In addition to these, Oklahoma has over 150 public-use airports. It is also well connected through a dense network or road and rail.

When one thinks of Oklahoma, what immediately comes to mind are cowboys mounted on their horses riding through the prairie and Rocky Mountains. This was actually the case till the late 19th and the early 20th century. It also has a heavy Native American influence, due to presence of various tribes in this area. A 10-day fair called the Oklahoma State Fair, is an annual event that is held in mid-September in Oklahoma City, it attracts about a million people. There is also a 10-day fair in Tulsa, which attracts a similar turnout as the Oklahoma fair, and is held in the end of September annually. Both these fairs are major tourist magnets, with different exhibit halls, action-packed entertainment like western stunt shows, and an array of different animals and fairground rides that would light up any kid's eyes.

And for all you beer lovers, there is the annual Oktoberfest, in Tulsa, besides the beer it would also give you a flavor of everything German, so if you ever wondered how German food tastes, now you have an opportunity to try it. For all the music lovers out there, Oklahoma hosts two very popular music festivals, one at Tulsa called Dfest, showcasing the talents of local bands and musicians from Oklahoma, and the other at Norman called the Norman Music Festival. Norman also hosts one of the largest weekend events in the whole of Oklahoma, called the Medieval Fair, the name explains everything, and it's one of the highest rated events in the whole of the United States.

It would probably be fair to say that ‘fairs' are an integral part of the whole Oklahoma experience, pun intended. It's also an experience which should be a part of every vacation itinerary.
